Bob and Tania's travels
in Europe for 2006 & 2007:
Austria
Getting away from the crowded
streets of Italy into the equally crowded streets of
Austria...
France
Located 35 Km northeast from
Bordeaux Saint-Emilion is an enchanting spot to
relax and learn about the wonderful world of
wine (vines, harvest, weather, soil, taste and
smell. A pleasure for all the senses...)
After spending the night in
Brussels, Belgium they then headed south towards
France. This was their first foray into "Wine
Country" and fortunately arriving at the
beginning of "Vendage" (harvesting the grapes). A great learning experience and lots of "Bubbly"
to enjoy.
More ventures into Champagne
Region and the "Vendage". Learning how to
make Champagne.
Tania always wanted to return
to the "Châteaux Region" to visit her two
favorites; "Chenonceau and Chambord". She
finally got the chance...
Germany
Using a Rhine Ferry to see
the spectacular Castle Country of Southern
Germany was a real treat. A great day.
But still a crowded boat...
Greece
Bob and Tania met up with 22
other friends and neighbors on the island of
Rhodes in August of 2006. Lots of fun
ensued.
There was so much fun on the
trip to Rhodes that two pages were needed to see
it all.
After spending almost a week
in Rhodes Bob and Tania then flew to Athens
where they spent a few days exploring the
ancient ruins.
Italy
Italy
- Rome and Venice 2006
After leaving Athens they traveled
by train to Patra where they took an overnight ferry
(with cruise ship-type accommodations) to Anacona in
Italy. Then by train to Rome where they once again
met up with friends and enjoyed the delights of
Rome.
After departing by train they were
astonished to arrive in Venice literally one hour
before the world famous "Regatta Storica" was to
take place on the canals. They were able to
grab a last minute fabulous room on the Grand Canal
in time to see the festivities.
Italy
- Chianti Region 2007
Portugal
Lisboa
-
Portugal - Lisboa October 2006
By the time
Bob and Tania arrived in Portugal they were very tired.
They had taken a train from Granada (after
getting on the wrong train) to Seville only to
find out they could not get to Lisbon from there
directly. A quick train back to Madrid got
them on the overnight hotel train to Lisbon (and
arriving quite a few days earlier than planned). Fortunately Ambassador Hoffman and his
family were very gracious and understanding so
they had a relaxing time in Lisbon before
returning to the boat.

Portugal -
Cascais - September 2007
After finally
completing their crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, Bob and
Tania made Cascais their homeport for a few weeks.
Tania spent a fun few days with some
teammates from Gulf Harbour at the Ambassador's
Residence.
Douro River Valley and Alentejo Region- 2007
Renting
a car, Bob and Tania visited several areas of Portugal they had
missed the previous year - in search of great ports,
wines and olive oils.
Algarve Region - 2007
After some repairs, they crossed
down the coastline past Cabo São Vicente and sailed
on to Lagos in the Algarve Region for a few weeks.
Just fun photos and sailing pictures
from a great day out on the water on board "Courtier".
Madeira
Islands - 2007
After some repairs, they crossed
from the Algarve Region, Lagos, Portugal to the
Madeiras Islands chain enroute to the Canary Islands
and the Caribbean.
Exploring the rest of the island
of Madeira was quite a treat. So much so they
look forward to visiting here again in the future.
Thanksgiving holiday aboard "Vahana".
After departing mainland Portugal
we turned southwestward in our trek back to the
Caribbean and enjoyed a few islands along the way.
Spain
In Spain they
spent a few days at the border area (Biarritz)
and then into Pamplona to see where the running
of the bulls takes place. From there it
was on to Madrid for a day and
then to Granada for a few days. After
getting on the wrong train to Seville (the
conductor put them off on a side stop and phoned
another train heading in the proper direction to
pick them up) they then traveled to Seville for
a few hours (see above for details).
Traveling
throughout the Andalusia area of Spain, they saw
some amazing buildings and beautiful
countryside. And they finally got to see
"The Rock".
Canary Islands
Continuing
their trip on toward the Caribbean they stopped
in the Canary Islands for provisioning and
weather windows.
La Gomera was
the last stop before departing for the Caribbean
and crossing back across the Atlantic.
Switzerland
An incredibly
beautiful and expensive place. The scenery
was spectacular and Tania got to re-visit some
old sights from 1983...
