Italy - Rome

August 2006

Bob and Tania took a few months off of me to enjoy some sights in Europe in the fall of 2006. They met up with 22 other friends from home in Florida on the beautiful island of Rhodes in Greece...Then they traveled throughout Europe enjoying new adventures (and re-living some old ones for Tania who backpacked there in 1983...)

  • This trip was a great time to reconnect with old friends from Florida.   After meeting up with Mark Davis and Jackie Jewell in Athens, they were able to re-connect  in Rome also (Along with the Hill's and Roger's).  Bob is viewing one of his favorite sculptor's "Bernini" work in his favorite "Pizza" (that's American for Piazza Navona). A view of the Vatican from Ponte Umberto across Ponte Sant'Angelo which spans the Fiume Tevere.

  • They did the usual tourist sight-seeing like The Colonna di Marco Aurelio (a history book of detailed reliefs that illustrate the victorious campaigns of Marcus Aurelius against Barbarians.), the Colosseo, and Foro Romano (Roman Forum).

  • They visited the Città Del Vaticano with the Cappella Sistina as well as Castel Sant'Angelo. A view across Ponte Umberto to a government building with similar late 19th century architecture as well as the similar bronze chariot statues as on the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II.

  • Of course coins had to be thrown into the Fontana di Trevi (ensuring another return to Rome in the future...), a visit to the beautiful Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II (honoring Italy's first king and the unification of Italy) and a quick lunch at a cafe next to a very popular water fountain (people were using it all the time).

  •    The Palazzo Colonna is a private palace but is best known for setting where Audrey Hepburn met the press in the movie"Roman Holiday".  From the floor of the Foro Romano (Roman Forum) you can see over the Arco di Settimio Severo (built in 203 A.D.) towards Palazzo Senatorio.  Looking towards the remains of Tempio di Vespasiano (three Corinthian styled columns that were a favorite of 19th century poets).
